Best: January to February, June to October. Busiest: July to October, so book early.
- Great Migration is in the Mara: herds usually arrive July or August and head south from late September through October. August and September are the safest bet; river crossings are never guaranteed.
- Long rains: wildlife stays plentiful, but rain can disrupt activities.
- Short rains, with fewer crowds than migration season.
- Mara Reserve fee is US$100 per non-resident adult per day (January to June, 2026 rate). Children 9–17 US$50, 8 and under free. Check the 2027 rate.
- Mara Reserve fee is US$200 per non-resident adult per day (July to December, 2026 rate). Children 9–17 US$50, 8 and under free. Check the 2027 rate.
- Yellow fever: Kenya asks for a certificate only if you arrive from or transit a risk country, and India is not one. But India lists Kenya as a risk country, so on return you need an original certificate (vaccinated at least 10 days earlier, age 9 months and over) or face up to 6 days’ quarantine. Verify before booking.
- Malaria risk in all areas below 2,500 m including game parks, with rare cases in central Nairobi. Ask your doctor about prophylaxis for the Mara and Naivasha.
- Protests have occurred in Nairobi and other cities since 2024. Check local news before travel.
